Line Up Without Talking
The group arranges itself in a line by birthday or another order without speaking, using only gestures and creativity to communicate.
- Time
- 10 to 15 minutes
- People
- 8 to 40
- Where
- In person
- You need
- Nothing
How to play
- Explain the task: line up in order of birthday, month and day only, from January 1 at one end to December 31 at the other.
- Announce the rule: no talking, writing or showing phones; gestures and holding up fingers are fine.
- Start the timer and let the group work it out, stepping in only if someone is confused or the space gets crowded.
- When the group thinks it is done, go down the line and have each person say their birthday aloud.
- Fix any swaps, note the time, and ask what strategies emerged and who helped lead.
Tips
- If anyone cannot move easily, let them pick a fixed spot and have the line form around them, or play with name cards on a table.
- Offer other orders, like first name alphabetically or how far each person traveled today, for people who prefer not to share a birthday.
Variations
- Beat the clock: try again with a new order and aim to beat the first time.
- Two lines: split into two teams and race each other on the same order.
