Off-Limits Clues
A clue giver helps teammates guess a target word without saying it or any of the off-limits words listed on the card.
- Time
- 15 to 25 minutes
- People
- 4 to 20
- Where
- In person or Virtual
- You need
- cards with a target word and four off-limits words, timer
How to play
- Prepare cards in advance: a target word at the top, such as umbrella, and four words below it that cannot be used, such as rain, wet, open and handle.
- Split into two teams and choose a first clue giver from team one.
- Start a one-minute timer while the clue giver describes as many cards as possible, using no gestures, rhymes or spelling.
- A player from the other team watches the card and calls out if an off-limits word slips out; that card is skipped.
- Score one point for every correct guess, then pass the turn to the other team with a new clue giver.
- Keep rotating until everyone has given clues at least once.
Tips
- On a video call, the host sends each clue giver the cards by private chat, one at a time.
- Allow one skip per turn so nobody gets stuck on a word they do not know.
- Write cards around your team's world, like project names or office spots, for an inside-joke round.
Variations
- Single-word clues: the clue giver may say only one word per clue, which turns it into a puzzle.
- Cooperative mode: everyone plays on one team and tries to beat its own score.
