Word Association Chain
Players take turns saying the first word that comes to mind after the previous word, building a fast and often funny chain.
- Time
- 5 to 10 minutes
- People
- 4 to 25
- Where
- In person or Virtual
- You need
- Nothing
How to play
- Agree on a speaking order, such as clockwise in a room or the order of names on screen.
- The host says a starting word, for example sunshine.
- Each player answers with the first related word that comes to mind, such as beach, then sand, then castle.
- Aim for under three seconds per turn; a repeated word or a long pause sends the chain back to the host for a new word.
- After a few minutes, challenge the group to recall the whole chain backward from the last word to the first.
Tips
- There are no wrong answers, so laugh with odd leaps rather than questioning them.
- Give a pass option so a player who blanks can hand the turn to the next person.
- Close by asking which jump in the chain was the most surprising.
Variations
- Topic chain: every word must relate to a theme such as food, travel or your product.
- No connections: each word must have no obvious link to the last, and the group buzzes when it spots one.
