Word Ladder Relay
Teams turn a start word into a target word by changing one letter at a time, with every step forming a real word.
- Time
- 10 to 20 minutes
- People
- 4 to 30
- Where
- In person or Virtual
- You need
- whiteboard or paper, list of start and target word pairs
How to play
- Explain the rule with an example: COLD becomes WARM through CORD, CARD and WARD, changing one letter each time.
- Split into teams of two to four, using breakout rooms and a shared document online.
- Give every team the same start and target word, such as CAT to DOG or HEAD to TAIL.
- Team members take turns adding the next rung, so every player contributes at least one step.
- The first team to reach the target using only real words wins the round, and the shortest ladder earns a bonus point.
- Check each ladder aloud and play two or three rounds with new pairs.
Tips
- Start with three-letter words before moving to four letters, so newer players build confidence.
- Allow a dictionary check for disputed words to keep it friendly.
Variations
- Solo race: each person works alone and the group compares ladders at the end.
- Expert round: try five-letter pairs once the group is warmed up.
