Yes, And Planning
Pairs plan an imaginary event where every reply must start with yes, and, showing how building on ideas beats picking them apart.
- Time
- 10 to 15 minutes
- People
- 4 to 30
- Where
- In person or Virtual
- You need
- Nothing
How to play
- Pair people up, using breakout rooms on a video call, and give everyone the same scenario, like planning a team trip to the bottom of the sea.
- In round one, partners take turns adding ideas, but every reply must start with yes, but, followed by a problem.
- After two minutes, switch to round two, where every reply must start with yes, and, adding to the idea.
- Run round two for three minutes and encourage bigger and sillier ideas.
- Bring everyone together to compare how each round felt and which plan sounds more fun.
Tips
- Name the lesson at the end: accepting an idea first keeps brainstorming moving, even if you refine it later.
- Keep the scenario playful so nobody feels their real work ideas are being judged.
Variations
- Group chain: play in a circle of five where each person adds one yes, and line.
- Real problem: after the warm-up, use yes, and for five minutes on a genuine team question.
